In all of Colin Brown's work there is a dazzling combination of awe-inspired reverence and unrelenting curiosity towards the natural world. Whether he's taking photos of seals on the coasts of the Channel Islands, Half Dome embraced by rolling fog, or a hollow beach breaks up and down the Pacific Coast, Colin's eye is focused by his sheer fascination and utter humility before nature's beauty. Classic landscape shots are imbued with fantasy. Waves get their grace, sexiness, and magnitude of force exposed. It comes easy for Colin: he can't help but be mesmerized by it all.

Born and raised in Los Angeles' South Bay, Colin developed a love for the ocean and surfing at a young age. It became a sanctuary from the tumult of frequently transferring to new high schools. A misfit among his peers at school, he felt a kinship with the elder surf bums wallowing through life at the beach. He learned from their personal missteps and took their sage advice to focus on school and the rest would fall into place. It was through wave riding that Colin first became fascinated with the earth sciences and left LA at 17 to pursue a degree in meteorology. Disenchanted by the curriculum and stressed out from working full time, Colin sought relief via surf and travel. Occasionally he would find himself in front of the camera lens as an up and coming rider. At the same time he noticed that the surf publications of the day lacked the types of images he was seeing with his owns eyes; Colin was eager to share his own personal world of waves.

After completing a preliminary photography course at Ventura College, Colin realized photography would be an ideal career as it was the perfect blend of art and science. He entered Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, focusing on a degree in professional photography and digital imaging. After a short stint working as a freelance surf photographer, he accepted a position with a government contractor producing documentary photo, video, and high speed imagery for the United States
Navy and other national defense agencies. Currently residing outside
of Los Angeles in idyllic Camarillo, Colin is still capturing images
of his beloved waves and nature during his free time and travels
around the world. Soon all of his favorite works will be
available for purchase through this website.
